I get that there's a really devoted Commander following at the Litchfield store, and that a number of those players find 60-card constructed to be boring because of the added consistency of 4-ofs and a smaller total deck size. However, myself (and I would imagine at least some others) enjoy having a coherent strategy that we try to execute every game. The number of tutor cards in Commander serve to make that format much more consistent than it might otherwise be anyway, but this post is less about arguing in favor of constructed play, and more about figuring out what format would be good to grow a community around. All that intro stated, what format would people be interested in, of the officially supported ones? The benefit of using a sanctioned format is that Bobbaloo's can have official tournaments, and get more support from WotC as a result, which in turn means more promotional items and access to product for us players. The main candidates are: -Standard -Pros: -Limited card pool allows for a lot of innovation -People are opening packs of the most recent sets, so the cards tend to be more available than older stuff -Cons: -Format rotates, making it expensive to keep up with the meta if you want to be competitive -Limited card pool means only certain archetypes are meaningfully viable -Pioneer -Pros: -Eternal format, don't need to worry about building a new deck next year -Doesn't use any really old cards (card pool starts with Return to Ravnica) -No fetch lands makes decks cheaper than other eternal formats -Cons: -No fetch lands means 3-color mana bases are extremely challenging to play, limiting deck choice
-A lot of really cool cards that you can play in Modern didn't make the Pioneer cutoff -Modern -Pros:
-Most popular eternal format, very easy for travelers and visitors to play when they come in
-Extremely diverse format
-Cons:
-Fetch lands make the format expensive
-Modern Horizons sets made Modern less "rotation-proof" than it was supposed to be
-Legacy
-Pros: -Best format
-Diverse range of strategies due to all cards ever printed being legal, unless specifically banned
-Truly rotation-proof, because the old cards are powerful enough that updating your deck is cheap
-Cons:
-Extremely expensive because of reserved list
-Could play with proxies, and I would be happy with that, but don't think that can be sanctioned
-Power level of format makes it hostile to brewing new decks unless you really know what you're doing
-Pauper
-Pros:
-Really cheap, since it's only commons
-Truly rotation-proof, since very few good commons are introduced each year (like, 10 or so usually)
-Reasonably popular format, so travelers and visitors are reasonably likely to have a deck to play
-Cons:
-Kind of slow for my tastes
-Sort of a solved format for the most part
I really want to get us going with some kind of constructed play. If ya'll could please drop a comment saying which format(s) you would be interested in playing. I personally think that starting with Pioneer and Pauper would be best, and those who are interested can also play Standard. Modern has reached the point where it's almost as expensive as Legacy, and with the Reserved List making people not willing to pick up Legacy, Pioneer and Pauper seem like the best eternal formats to build a community around right now.
